Pyjama Films has an exciting opportunity for an experienced FREELANCE STORYBOARD ARTIST to join the crew of Belzebubs (13 x 22 min), a hearty adult animated comedy about a family of black metal cultists. The series is based on the popular webcomic of the same name by Finnish artist JP Ahonen. The project is an international co-production between three European countries.

STORYBOARD / BEAT BOARD ARTIST IN BRIEF

  • Location: remote or on-site in Turku; for remote work, location within +/- 3 hours of the EET (Helsinki) time zone required 

  • Type: Freelance, part-time

  • Level: Mid/Senior

  • Start date: As soon as possible, latest April 2024

  • Duration: 3-4 month

STORYBOARD / BEAT BOARD ARTIST DUTIES

  • Collaborate with Leadership: Engage closely with the Series Director and Assistant Director to meticulously craft beat boards for each episode. These detailed beat boards will serve as the foundation for developing a rough animatic, guiding the initial visualization process.
  • Establish Episode Tone: Take the lead in setting the episode’s tone, providing a clear, artistic direction for storyboard artists to follow. Your insights will shape the narrative’s visual and emotional impact.
  • Bridge Creative Processes: Develop beat boards that blend elements of traditional beat boards with the detail of rough storyboards. These documents will act as essential blueprints for storyboard artists, laying out the groundwork for tone, camera angles, and overall cinematography early in the production process.
  • Maintain Visual Consistency: Uphold the series’ visual language, ensuring a cohesive and consistent aesthetic across all episodes. Verify that storyboards adhere to established technical guidelines for feasible animation production

AM I RIGHT FOR THE ROLE?

  • Your extensive previous experience as storyboard artist for a 2D animated series targeted at adults or teens has given you an in-depth understanding of visual storytelling for a grown-up audience

  • You understand the limitations of 2D rigged animation (Harmony) and know how to create boards that are technically feasible

  • You’re fluent in Storyboard Pro

  • Your storyboard portfolio displays solid experience with 2D animation, including strong posing and composition and examples of visual comedy and action scenes

  • Your strong draftsmanship allows you to create clear and readable images in a fast-paced environment

  • You bring a friendly and constructive approach to communication

  • You speak and write English fluently

  • You’re located within +/- 3 hours of the EET (Helsinki) timezone or willing to adjust your work to suitable hours.
