Full-Time Previs Supervisor

Job Description


WildBrain is looking for a Previs/Layout Supervisor to join our Vancouver studio for a feature quality episodic production. We can’t say what it is yet, but it is an action oriented global franchise with beloved characters! In this role, you work in collaboration with the Directors to define shooting style and lens packages. You establish camera blocking, lens choice and composition, while working closely with other departments to ensure smooth transitions and improved tools and processes. You oversee the daily activities and processes of the Previs team, provide training and assign sequences, while meeting the creative and scheduling requirements of the production.

Supervise previs team in execution of camera lensing and staging, composition and blocking of scenes from storyboard animatics
In collaboration with the Series Director, define shooting style and lens package for series
Mentor, train, and guide the Previs team, in new software and through shot production
Review and critique the Previs team via dailies or weeklies
Provide bid times for all Previs tasks series wide
Collaborate with pipeline to improve Previs process and workflow
Ensure complete and seamless integration of all Previs assets within the pipeline
Create previs proxy objects for modelling team as needed
Create and implement camera rigs and templates at a series level
Communicate and work closely with the Series Director, and Storyboard Supervisor
Create and maintain Department wiki pages
Lead the team to deliver the show needs on time and to the expected quality standards
Continually evaluate process and workflow of previs department striving for maximum efficiency
Overseeing the daily activities, leading the department, and establishing best practice workflows and guidelines for the team
Review, debug and improve other team members’ assets, workflows and techniques
Meet production deadlines and maintain regular communication with the production team
Implement workflow, scripts and tools as needed
Anticipating, communicating, and troubleshooting any creative or technical issues
Organizing training for new employees as well as refresher sessions for existing team members in order to keep them up to date with new tools and technics
Working closely with management to guide artists overall professional development by providing performance feedback, mentoring, resolving performance issues and maintaining positive morale within the team
Assist the Artist Management and Recruiting departments in the the crew selection process
Be a positive and creative force in building a healthy work and team culture
Communicate with other supervisor and team leads on concerns and production issues ahead of time


5+ years of experience as a Previs Artist
2+ years Supervisory experience on an Animated Feature film or Feature Quality Episodic production
Solid knowledge of Maya is essential
Excellent knowledge of cinematic language and camera terminology
Ability to interpret storyboards and realize them in a 3D environment
Firm understanding of cameras, staging, composition, perspective, pacing, timing and cinematography concepts in animation context
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team, often with multiple tasks and under deadline pressure
Excellent at communicating creative and technical thoughts and ideas in a positive, professional manner
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, often with multiple tasks and under deadline pressure
Encouraging attitude towards feedback and new initiatives


Basic modeling and rigging is an asset
Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, Computer Animation, or other relevant area of study and/or equivalent job experience
Experience in episodic production methodologies is a benefit
