Character and Asset Design Supervisor

As a Character and Asset Design Supervisor you will be responsible for:
– Ability to work under the Art Director’s guidance and supervision to develop character and asset designs in line with the existing visual language of the show
– Ability to work to a brief and create a variety of designs for each character
– Troubleshoot and adapt existing models and help the team find ways to adjust designs for ease of animation.
– Assist the Art Director in integrating the characters, their shapes and visual motifs to the overall style of the show.
– Working as part of a design team to maximize the contributions of each designer for the film.
– Supervise and support junior Character and Asset Design Artist/s.
– Ensure quality and style of show is consistently achieved in your work and your team’s work and that all notes/retakes are added.
– Maintain well-structured files and adhere to established layer and texture naming conventions.
– Responsible for clarifying the Director’s and the Art Director’s vision to the Design team. Please note that your role demands communicating the necessary retakes to your team as well as providing solutions to help them accomplish their tasks; only in very special circumstances you should be fixing their work.
– To brief each Design artist on their assigned tasks.
– To help each Design artist adhere to their assigned quotas.
– Work closely with other Designers, Art Director, Director and Production.
– To supervise and deliver any additional character and props design fixes as required by the Art Director, Director and Production Manager.
– Create model sheets that cover the following areas:
Character Turnarounds (front, back, side/profile, and three-quarter views)
Character Poses
Face shapes and expressions
Character line-up showing the scale of all characters in relation to each other
– Responsible for designing and creating models sheets of Props
– Follow instructions of Art Director, Director and Production Manager to meet creative standard and production deadlines.
– To report, communicate progress of work and address any problems to the Production Manager and Production Coordinator.
– To help with the coach and training of interns and juniors in the Design department if needed.
– To attend departmental kick-off meetings, reviews and Director approvals as needed.
– To be available on-line and by emails during working hours
– Follow exact procedures set by Dog Ears.

Requirements

– High proficiency in Photoshop is required
– Must have a working knowledge of 2D animation as it applies to character and asset design from conceptual stage through production ready assets
– Candidate must be able to understand & align with the Art Director’s choices, with the aim of facilitating this art-direction to aid the Art Team.
– The candidate will also be a highly motivated artist with strong drawing skills,
– Ability to communicate ideas visually
– Capable of maintaining a high level of visual and technical quality for all location designs
– Excellent verbal and written communication skills
– Excellent team management skills, inspiring the team to put forth their best work
– Proficiency in technical problem solving
– Strong time management skills
– Ability to prioritise tasks in coordination with production needs
– Knowledge of Toon Boom Harmony software, a plus
– The ideal candidate should have at least 3-5 years’ experience as Character/Asset Designer on theatrically distributed 2D features and/or aired television series.
– Ability to manage time successfully in prioritizing tasks
– Strong communication skills addressing any issues concerning production
– Meet deadlines as established by production management
