Full-Time Assistant Professor of Animation

Job Description

The Radio, Television, & Film Department welcomes applications for a full-time (10-month) tenure-track Assistant Professor to join the department September 1, 2020. The Department is looking for a creative individual with strong technical and professional skills to teach animation courses. In addition the candidate should have experience teaching Autodesk products: 3Ds Max, Maya, Mudbox, Motionbuilder and the Adobe Creative Suite. Candidates should also have a demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.

This tenure-track position also carries an expectation of successful creative scholarly activities, research and publications, which should include animation production work recognized at professional levels, including applied commercial work and animation film festivals. The candidate should make considerable efforts to seek external funding and grants to support creative research. In addition, the successful candidate will be asked to contribute to the department and university through service including, but not limited to, mentoring of students, curriculum development, and program assessment.

The Radio, Television, & Film Department is one of six departments in the College of Communication & Creative Arts that includes Art, Communication Studies, Journalism, Public Relations & Advertising, and Writing Arts. CCCA’s goal is to empower people to be storytellers, artists, critical thinkers, and engaged citizens. The college serves nearly 1900 majors through ten B.A.s, two B.F.A.s, and two M.A.s. The college is seeing unprecedented growth, having hired 40% of its full-time faculty over the past two years as well as nearly doubling the number of entering freshmen. Additionally, we house first-year writing and public speaking, which serve all Rowan students.

Rowan University is a Carnegie-classified Doctoral University (R2: High Research Activity) with over 19,000 students. Requirements: The successful candidate will possess an MFA or equivalent international degree in animation and/or closely related animation discipline with experience teaching at the collegiate level. ABD candidates with dissertation nearing completion will be considered. The terminal degree is required at the time of appointment.

Strong technical and professional background with various capabilities in digital media in the area of 2d and 3d animation, with related co-media production techniques (illustration, graphics, photo-manipulation and compositing.)
Ability to inform students through methods and processes that communicate research based education, problem solving, team leadership, project development in animation and timed-based motion design.
Familiarity with contemporary issues, theories and historical context(s) of animation is greatly desired.
Experience in teaching Autodesk products: 3Ds Max, Maya, Mudbox, Motionbuilder and in the Adobe Creative Suite. Toon Boom Studio experience, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Premiere and Adobe Animate experience is preferred.
Understanding professional requirements for animation studio-level portfolios and preparedness for industry standards and film festival competitions.
Optional experience with alternative methods of animation production, including hand-drawn frame by frame, stop-motion photography and alternative interdisciplinary compositing with video and animation.
Previous teaching experience highly desired but not a requirement.
