SADFISH Application TIP #1: YOUR DEMO REEL

If you're an animator looking for work right now, this one's for you.

SADFISH INDUSTRY TIP #1: YOUR DEMO REEL

Think of your reel the way an athlete thinks about their highlight reel... it's the plays that made people rewind, not every play they've ever made.

The goal is to have someone watch it and immediately want to know who you are. The best way to get there is to keep it short and lead with the work you're proudest of.

A good rule of thumb: if you're not sure whether a shot is strong enough to include, try removing it and see how the reel feels without it. The instinct is always to include more because you worked hard on it and cutting feels wasteful, but the reel actually gets stronger every time you remove something that isn't at the same level as everything else.

Half of us learned this the hard way with our own reels before we became a collective -- we all had that moment where we finally cut the shots we were hanging onto out of guilt and watched the whole thing click into place.

Your best work looks even better when it's surrounded by more of your best work. Most of the time your reel will feel tighter and more confident, and that confidence is what makes someone watch your reel and think, "wooaaaaaaaaah.... i need to work with this person!!!".

Let your strongest work speak for itself.
